After the disappointing box office (and reviews) for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniaall eyes were on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 to see if the next MCU Phase 5 release would be more successful.
The final adventure (for now, at least) for the Guardians team had an impressive opening weekend, grossing $118 million at the US box office, and added over $60 million. to its total at the US box office in its second weekend, one weekend. -49% drop on weekends
That might seem like a big drop from the first weekend, but for a superhero movie, it’s a second weekend number to be proud of.
According Varietyon over 30 Marvel movies released, alone Black Panther (45%) and Thor (47%) bragged about having stronger takes – while movies like Thor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and yes, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania saw their box office drop nearly 70% after their opening weekends. Sip.
Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has already earned more than $530 million worldwide in just two weeks, nearly $100 million more than Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania managed at the end of its run.
With the original guardians of the galaxy making a final total of $770 million worldwide when released in 2014 and 2017 guardians of the galaxy Volume 2 making $869 million, that means the third film could top both films if it continues to grab audiences’ attention over the next few weeks.
Of course, this can be tricky with the impending release of potential blockbusters. x fast And Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Versebut Guardians 3 has the advantage of both good reviews from critics and high audience scores.
Currently scoring 82% reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (and 94% audience score) and 64 on Metacritic, it doesn’t score nearly as high as guardians of the galaxy (92% Rotten Tomatoes and 76 Metacritics) or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (85% Rotten Tomatoes and 67 Metacritic), but it’s still rated higher than some other recent MCU sequels.
(Yes, we’re still talking about you, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and – sorry mighty Thor – both the Thor sequels too.)
The trio are also notable for putting star Chris Pratt in competition with himself.
With a US box office (to date) of $214 million, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is already the second most successful movie of 2023 in the United States – and the top spot is held by the animated giant who is The movie Super Mario Bros.featuring, of course, Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario.
It is unlikely that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will never steal that top spot, especially since there are some potentially huge movies slated for release this summer, including Flash, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fatenew Impossible mission film (after the enormous success of Top Gun: Maverickeveryone learned that you never bet against Tom Cruise) and Barbie.
It also likely won’t hit the $1 billion mark, especially as Hollywood films continue to struggle in China where Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has made $60 million so far. A decent result considering recent blockbuster performance, but not a gamechanger.
However, it is nonetheless a smash hit at the box office for Marvel and the guardians of the galaxy crew, and – if need be – an impressive farewell of which James Gunn and his team can be proud.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is currently in theaters. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 And Volume 2 And Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+.
