Another DC TV Series May Survive Cancellation (and It’s a Shock)

DC shows have been canceled left, right, and center over the past year, but one might unexpectedly survive.

We may be on the verge of having a new DC Universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, but there’s been little to celebrate in the run-up to that. DC Comics fans had to sit back and watch their favorite TV shows and movies get canceled before their eyes as Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios are trying to form a single universe through film and television.

However, there have been exceptions to this rule. Although the evolution of Warner Bros. Discovery and The CW over the past year resulted in the loss of batman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, DC’s StargirlAnd Noemishows like Superman and Lois And the flash have been renewed for new seasons (although the flashthe ninth season is the last). Meanwhile, Netflix has saved Dead Boy Detectivesand Amazon stepped in to save the canceled anime series Batman: Crusader Caped.

But it looks like the most unlikely DC show of all may survive impending cancellation, and that’s none other than Gotham Knights.

The CW Might Renew Gotham Knights Because It’s Cheaper To Make

As The CW’s era of Nexstar continues, there have been more cancellations this year as the network moves away from a slate full of original programming. Three shows remain on the bubble, with decisions yet to be made on the fate of Superman and Lois, Gotham KnightsAnd All Americans: Homecoming.

While Superman and Lois seems like the most likely choice for renewal given its popularity and the accolades it has received (it is currently the network’s most-watched program), the network may lean towards renewal Gotham Knights instead because it is cheaper to produce.

Nexstar aims to make The CW profitable and hopes to do so with less expensive programming. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Gotham Knights is “the cheapest DC series The CW has ever aired”, so it’s easy to see why the show suddenly has a chance of being renewed for a second season despite its lukewarm reception and strong viewing figures but lower. A second report from THR also confirms that they are keen to “keep at least one DC show on the network.”

As for Superman and Lois, THR adds that a switch to HBO Max would be possible given that it is “more expensive”. The show has proven popular on the streamer, so that would make sense, especially since James Gunn and Peter Safran were happy for it to continue for at least “one or two” more seasons before the universe DC does not come into full effect with Superman: Legacy.

They did not comment on the fate of Gotham Knights. But it looks like The CW is open to more of this show, which certainly surprised many DC fans.
