Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman, the first bird box introduces the audience to a world where a mysterious force has decimated the population. Although almost nothing is known about this “force”, it comes with a very simple set of rules – if you see it, you will die. Directed by Oscar winner Sandra Bullock as Malorie Hayes, bird box follows Malorie as she tries to survive and search for hope and a fresh start. Protecting her children from whatever lies out there, Malorie must travel through the woods and down a river to find the one place that might offer refuge. To achieve this, they will have to cover their eyes from the evil that pursues them.

Despite mixed reviews from critics and audiences, bird box was a major hit for Netflix upon release. Proving extremely popular with viewers, bird box won the title of most-watched film on Netflix within 28 days of its release (a title it has since lost to the action film red notice) and was watched by nearly 26 million viewers in its first week in the United States.

Only time will tell if audiences want to put on a blindfold again and stumble into the world of bird boxbut it’s clear the streaming giant has big plans for the franchise.

Birdhouse Barcelona is now set to debut on Netflix on July 14, 2023.
