Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is expected to post a lower than usual drop for the MCU in its second weekend at the box office.
This weekend marks Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3The second picture from and its last chance to top the weekend box office before Universal x fast takes first place next weekend. All eyes will be on Guardians 3The box office slump, with Marvel having a problem lately when it comes to the second weekend. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania dropped by 70%, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness And Thor: Love and Thunder dropped by 67 and 68 percent, respectively. Hollywood didn’t react as badly because both films had blockbuster openings, while Quantumania was a little soft despite dropping MLK Day weekend.
As Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 opened slightly lower than expected, grossing $114 million. However, since audiences seem to like this film a lot more than recent Marvel entries, it may have a less pronounced drop, like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which recorded a drop of only 63%. Some box office forecasters think there could be a drop of less than 60%, but I’m less optimistic.
The Super Mario Bros. the film is likely to fall to second place, adding somewhere between 8 and 10 million to its already massive box office. Among the newcomers this week, Book Club: The Next Chapter is the only one that should have much impact. The original film debuted with $13 million before grossing $68 million. The sequel probably won’t do as well, as it’s moved from Paramount to Focus Features and seems to be playing for audiences who, post-pandemic, aren’t as eager to hit theaters. That said, 80 for Brady shocked everyone and opened to $12.5 million, although they had a special for this one where tickets were discounted for all show times. book club 2 seems to be getting a more traditional version.
The new film by Robert Rodriguez, Hypnotic, also hits theaters this weekend. One would imagine that an action movie starring Ben Affleck would open at least in the top five, but it’s hard to get tracking data for the movie as it opens in a limited number. screens via a smaller distributor. We’ll have to wait and see how this one shakes up (although I enjoyed it).
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 – $53 million
Super Mario Bros – $9 million
Book Club: The Next Chapter – $8 million
Evil Dead Rise – $2.5 million
Are You There God It’s Me Margaret – $2 Million
