Although not a total stunner, James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 still managed to top the box office charts in its first frame, earning $114 million domestically and $282 million worldwide, by Deadline. According to the trade, the good news is that the Guardians performed well throughout the weekend, dropping 20% on Saturday to score $38 million, which bodes well for his long-term potential.
Comparatively, Guardians Vol. 2 opened to $146.5 million in 2017, while the original jumped to $94 million in 2014. Of course, the MCU was firing on all cylinders in 2017, so it’s best not to read too much down considerably. It’s fair to wonder how long we can continue to weed out dwindling box office returns.
The Super Mario Bros. movie, meanwhile, continues to soar. Universal/Illumination’s massive hit brought in another $18.6 million to bring its domestic total to $518.1 million. Worldwide, the picture has crossed the $1 billion mark and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Elsewhere, Evil Dead Rise became the highest-grossing film in the Evil Dead franchise. The pic earned $54.1 million after three weeks of release. Lionsgate’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret won $3.38 million (-50%) in her sophomore frame, bringing her total to $12.6 million.
