Box Office Results: Super Mario Bros. and Evil Dead Rise dominate

The movie Super Mario Bros. can’t be stopped, as the box office results indicate.

In its third weekend, the animated box office hit collected $58.2 million – the best third weekend for an animated film of all time, by Deadline – and swelled. closer to the $900 million mark at the worldwide box office. The pic has grossed $871.8 million worldwide, all without help from Korea or Japan, where the film opens this week. It will be interesting to see what lessons Hollywood learns from this massive success.

Oh and mario is now the third highest-grossing universal release of all time behind jurassic world ($653.4 million) and AND the extra-terrestrial ($437.1 million). Not adjusted for inflation, of course.

Somewhere else, Evil Dead Rise got off to a solid start of $23.5 million, which, considering its $19 million production cost, is a huge win for Warner Bros. As noted by Deadline, this opening echoes cocaine bear ($23.3M), Smile ($22.6M) and The black phone ($23.6 million).

Meanwhile, Guy Ritchie The deal earned a solid $6.28 million in its debut weekend. Good reviews and a strong following from audience releases suggest decent legs for the war thriller, which we’ll see in future box office results.
