Box Office Results: Super Mario Surpasses $1 Billion Worldwide

The Slot Machine That Doesn’t Stop continues to dominate box office results at home and abroad. In its fourth weekend, The movie Super Mario Bros. raised $40 million – a drop of just 30% – to bring its national total to $490 million. Its weekend total also marks the fourth-best weekend for an animated film of all time, beating the former Incredibles 2 record holder’s $28.2 million, per Deadline.

Mario crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide thanks to a $68.3 million weekend overseas. It opened wide in Japan, grossing $14.3 million – the country’s biggest opening for Illumination/Universal. Are assumptions too high on how Mario will fly in the coming weeks? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may steal some of its thunder this weekend, but there’s a curious lack of family movies on the horizon. So who knows?

Evil Dead Rise dropped 65% as expected, but still earned $44.4 million after two weeks. New release, Are You There God? This Is Me, Margaret collected $6.8 million from 3,343 sites, while action epic Sisu and Big George Foreman grossed $3.25 million and $3 million, respectively.

Amazingly, the 40th anniversary re-release of Return of the Jedi grossed $4.7 million for 475 theaters, averaging an incredible $10,300 per screen.
