Chinese Box Office: ‘Fast X’ Generates $18 Million Midweek Open

More than two million people turned out to watch “Fast X” in Chinese theaters on Wednesday, spending a total of $15.3 million on the film on its first day of release.

This made the 10th film in the “Fast & Furious” franchise a clear winner at the Chinese box office in an unusual midweek release. And that put “Fast X” on track to become the biggest Hollywood movie so far this year in the world’s second-biggest movie market.

Preliminary data from local service Ent Group showed the film also earned $2.83 million from its Tuesday preview. This gives an estimated total of $18.2 million by the end of its first official day of release.

Early scores and forward bookings show that “Fast X” should continue to be the best movie throughout the weekend, despite new releases of Chinese titles coming out on Friday (the most conventional day for Chinese releases). cinema in China) and will compete for the screens.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which led the Chinese box office charts in its first two weekends, dropped to third place on Wednesday with a daily score of $920,000. after 13 days is $64.3 million.

Ticketing agency Maoyan predicts that “Fast X” will hit a lifetime total of RMB728 million ($104 million) in China. However, estimates at this stage are subject to significant revisions.

With the notable exception of “Avatar: The Way of the Water,” which saw a surge in consumption between late December and mid-January, Hollywood movies have struggled to regain their former favor in the Empire this year. middle. The lull follows a period when Chinese regulators cut imports of Hollywood films and a market in 2022 that fell to levels not seen in a decade due to strict anti-COVID measures.

Previous “Fast” movies have moved up a gear in China much faster. In 2015, “Fast 7” grossed RMB 346 million (US$49.4 million at the current exchange rate) on its opening day. In 2018, “Fast 8” accelerated with 417 million RMB ($59.6 million) in its opening day round.

The perhaps predictable new film has thrilled fans of the franchise and left others on the sidelines. On ticketing platforms Maoyan and Taopiaopiao, the film received a user rating of 9.0 out of 10. On the more sophisticated film review website, the film’s score is a buzzier 6.9.
