The last historical epic of Mani Ratnam Ponniyin Selvan II continues to dominate the box office and grossed $37 million in ten days. Released worldwide on April 28, the Tamil film stars Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Karthi in prominent roles.
Ratnam made a two-part historical epic based on Kalki’s books Ponnyyin Selvan which tell the story of the Chola kingdom in the Indian region. The first part was released last year and scored big at the box office. Ravi tries out for the lead role of Arunmozhi Varman aka Ponniyin Selvan. Rai stars as Nandini and Vikram was paired opposite her as Arunmozhi’s brother, Aditha Karikalan. Ponniyin Selvan, much like the books, paints strong and powerful female characters who chart the course of their own journeys and follow passions and ambitions that speak to their own hearts. Ponnyyin Selvan packs a thrilling narrative with beautiful settings and brilliant performers for an enchanting cinematic experience.
Meanwhile new hindi version The history of Kerala created ripples at the box office. The film earned $7 million in India alone within five days of its release. Made on an estimated budget of $5 million, the film’s opening collections amounted to $1 million. After a slight rise on Saturday, collections jumped to $2 million on Sunday and totaled $4 million in the first weekend in India. The history of Kerala scored well on Monday, the first business day since its release, and earned $1.2 million.
Directed by Sudipto Sen, the film is said to be based on true stories and is about missing girls from the Indian state of Kerala who were allegedly brainwashed by the terrorist organization ISIS. The film stars Adah Sharma in the lead role and is set to be released outside India on May 12. It also stars Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, Sonia Balani and Vijay Krishna in prominent roles.
The history of Kerala became a point of political struggle in India, with some political parties hailing it as a necessary work of art and several others snubbing it as a propaganda tool. The point of contention is the number of girls who disappeared and joined ISIS. A few Indian states have waived taxes on the film while some have banned the screening of the film.
On the other hand, Diljit Dosanjh’s Punjabi film Jodie opened with a collection of $0.5 million in India over the weekend and closed with a worldwide gross of $1.5 million. Starring Dosanjh, the film hit theaters on May 5.
by Salman Khan Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan finally managed to cross $12 million as it completed 18 days at the box office on Monday. The movie Khan was released in theaters a week before Ponniyin Selvan II.
The latest Hollywood release guardians of the galaxy earned $3.6 million in India. Globally, the latest Marvel movie is closing in on $300 million. The film stars Zoe Saldaña, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
