Hit Movie Matthew McConaughey Accepted Because of Fortune Teller

Actors often select their projects based on a wide variety of factors, ranging from thorough research into the source material to fleeting attacks of intuition that guide them to their final destination. For Matthew McConaughey, it took an unexpected conversation with a fortune teller to convince him to take on a project. While such an impulsive decision could go wrong in many ways, it definitely worked for McConaughey.

Although McConaughey delivered some serious dramatic performances in works like Christopher Nolan Interstellar and the acclaimed HBO show real detective, the actor made his first breakthrough as a reliable leading man in romantic comedies. As he established himself as an instantly recognizable icon in the industry, McConaughey took on a string of rom-coms like Ghosts of girlfriends past to increase their stock.

In the case of one such rom-com, McConaughey had to talk to a random fortune teller before he decided he was going to. Title How to lose a guy in 10 days, McConaughey stars alongside Kate Hudson as the two begin their journey from completely antithetical positions to discover they have a common interest. Although the film received mixed reviews, it inevitably became a huge commercial success.

During a conversation with vanity lounge, McConaughey recalled how a fortune teller approached him on the street and read his mind. The actor began: “I remember thinking whether or not I was going to do it one night as I was walking down Sunset Boulevard when suddenly this guy came out of nowhere to me – he was a guru of the fortune teller. [and] goes, ‘Can I tell you your fortune real quick?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, man. Of course.'”

McConaughey added, “He immediately said, ‘There’s a movie you’re considering right now. It’s a romantic comedy. You have to, or it will be one of the biggest regrets of your life. It’s going to be great, it’s going to be an amazing experience and it’s going to bring in a lot of money. I remember thinking, ‘Did the studio hire this guy?’ I laughed at the thought, but I also remember taking more serious consideration. I think I even accepted the offer the next day.

While How to lose a guy in 10 days failed to deviate from Hollywood’s tired formula for romantic comedy success, McConaughey and Hudson maintained an engaging on-screen chemistry that no doubt contributed to its success. Thankfully, the two eventually branched out into more diverse roles, resulting in more compelling additions to their respective works.
