An official trailer has been released for Mulligan. A new animated series for adults, Mulligan hits Netflix on May 12. The series is set in a world that has been ravaged by an alien invasion that was eventually won by the humans, but not without heavy losses. The survivors do their best to adapt to this new world as they try to rebuild themselves after the catastrophic event. You can see what the series looks like by watching the trailer below.
Mulligan is promoted as coming from the spirits behind 30 Rock And Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It is co-created by Robert Carlock and Sam Means, who also serve as co-showrunners. The pair executive produce alongside Tina Fey, David Miner, Erin Gurian, Scott Greenberg and Joal Kuwahara. Universal TV is producing in association with Little Stranger, Inc., Bevel Gears, 3 Arts Entertainment and Bento Box Entertainment.
The official synopsis of Mulligan is as follows:
After Earth is destroyed by an alien attack, a ragtag group of survivors must start society from scratch. This is an opportunity to learn from humanity’s past mistakes and do it right this time. Or make the same mistakes again. Probably the second.
Will Mulligan go far on Netflix?
Mulligan also features an all-star cast. The cast of characters includes Nat Faxon as Matty Mulligan, an ordinary man from Boston who is essentially humanity’s new leader; Chrissy Teigen as Lucy Suwan, who becomes the First Lady due to a brief romance with Matty; Tina Fey as Dr. Farrah Braun, a single mother who works as a military super-scientist; Sam Richardson as Simon Prioleau, the world’s only surviving historian; Dana Carvey as Senator Cartwright LaMarr, the scheming and self-proclaimed Vice President; and Phil LaMarr as Axatrax, the alien who is the only surviving alien from the battle against humanity, now residing in a prison cell.
Other cast members include Kevin Michael Richardson as the military cyborg TOD-209; Ayo Edebiri as Jayson Moody, aka General Scarpaccio, a teenage boy who became a self-appointed general after donning the uniform of a deceased general; Daniel Radcliffe as wealthy partier King Jeremy; and Ronny Chieng as Johnny Zhao, a Hong Kong billionaire who waited out the invasion while partying on a private yacht.
Many of the good ingredients are there for Mulligan be a hit on Netflix, but whether that will happen remains to be seen. It has just been announced that Big mouth will end on the streaming platform with its upcoming eighth season, showing that anime shows can have a long life at Netflix. That said, the streamer is infamous for its premature deletion of shows, and anime programs in particular seem to be struggling to stay on the platform for long. We will know soon enough what will happen with Mulligan when the show premieres in the near future. Potential renewals will obviously depend on the reception and its audience.
Mulligan will begin streaming on Netflix on May 12, 2023. The series consists of ten 30-minute episodes.
