The Whole Portokalos Family Returns to Greece in ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ Trailer

The Portokalos family is back in Greece! A third My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie is on the way, and this time it will follow Toula (Nia Vardalos) as she brings her entire family back to her late father Gus’ (Michael Constantine) childhood village to reconnect with their roots.

The first film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” premiered in 2002 and centers on 30-year-old Toula as she prepares to marry the very un-Greek Ian (John Corbett) in a lavish Greek ceremony. The 2016 sequel follows Toula and Ian as they navigate family life with their defiant daughter (Elena Kampouris). Vardalos wrote each of the films in addition to starring in them, but “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” marks the first time she’s also directed.

Apparently, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” was actually ready to go a few years ago, but was delayed by the pandemic. “I had written the script and we were ready to go in 2020. It’s an old story. Everyone was ready to go in 2020,” Vardalos told People. “But we went at the right time. We started shooting in the summer. It was amazing. It was an amazing experience. It was warm and sunny and the sun was shining. It was just awesome.” Vardalos also told the outlet that Toula and Ian are “stronger than ever” in the upcoming sequel.

She even teased a particularly romantic moment in an interview with MovieWeb. “We actually have a scene where we’re dancing on a pier in the most beautiful cobalt light that our amazing cinematographer, Barry Peterson, has waited and waited and waited for. John and I are standing on a pier dancing together, and we were both in tears,” she said. “It was amazing.”

“My Big Fat Wedding 3” follows Toula as she honors her father’s dying wish and takes the whole family to the village where he grew up in Greece. As she tries to reunite with her father’s childhood best friends, she ends up learning a lot more about her roots and family along the way.

Vardalos, Corbett, Kampouris, Andrea Martin, Louis Mandy and Maria Vacratsis are all back. “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” star Elias Kacavas also appears as a new character. Unfortunately, Constantine passed away in 2021, but Vardalos shared that before his death he told him he wanted the third film to move forward without him.

“He told me he couldn’t join us for the third movie and his wish was that we continue,” Vardalos told Entertainment Weekly in 2022. “I wrote the script to reflect Michael’s decision and I will always treasure his last of the messages for me, hoping we will film soon.”
