Rajkumar Santoshi explains why Andaz Apna Apna failed at the box office: neither Salman nor Aamir were promoted, distributors got angry

Asked about the box office report of Andaz Apna Apna, Rajkumar told Aaj Tak that people didn’t notice the movie because Salman had just had his first hit Maine Pyar Kiya which was a romantic movie while ‘Andaz Apna Apna was not one.

“Andaz Apna Apna was a completely different story, it had more comedy, adventure and humor than romance. It was a unique movie, I don’t remember seeing such a movie (before Andaz Apna Apna ). People have taken the time to understand this movie. When the movie was released 29 years ago, distributors were newcomers as well,” Rajkumar said.

The filmmaker also said that “neither Salman nor Aamir were in town to promote the film.” He added that even he was filming elsewhere and could not promote the film. “There was no activity related to the film. There was no interaction with the media either. Whatever had to be done for the publicity of the film, that could not be done either. The distributors were also very angry. Rajkumar Santoshi also ruled out any chance of working on a remake and said there was no scope because “the movie looks fresh even today. Anyone who tries to make a remake of this evergreen film will drown because it is not possible to make such a film.”

Earlier this year, Rajkumar spoke to Hindustan Times in an interview and shared his views on Andaz Apna Apna remake in detail. He said, “People often ask me to do Andaz Apna Apna again but I tell them, ‘I can’t do it again. I can make another film in the same genre maybe, but it won’t be Andaz Apna Apna. Two young male stars with two young female stars. I even spoke to stars and they told me that they wanted to make a film like Andaz Apna Apna.

He added, “I worked on the subject and the title that I kept is Ada Apni Apni. In fact, I will announce the film by the end of the year. People keep talking about a remake of Andaz Apna Apna, but I’m done with I’m doing Ada Apni Apni, maybe it will be better than Andaz Apna Apna, I don’t want to make Andaz Apna Apna a reference.
