‘Strange Way of Life’ Trailer: Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke Star in Pedro Almodovar’s Queer Cowboy Short [Watch]

“Strange Way of Life”, the new short film by the Oscar-winning director Pedro Almodovarreceived its first trailer on Wednesday, weeks before it premiered as an out-of-competition title at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

The film, a queer western that Almodovar says “could be my answer to ‘Brokeback Mountain,'” features Pedro Pascal And Ethan Hawke like a pair of gunslingers reuniting after years apart. Here is the official Almodovar synopsis provided Cannes: “A man crosses on horseback the desert which separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who comes to meet him, worked together as hitmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his childhood friend, and they indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not to go back in time to their past. old friendship…”

Almodovar added“I must not say more so as not to reveal all the surprises of the scenario. The strange way of life evoked in the title alludes to the famous fado of Amalia Rodrigueswhose lyrics suggest that there is no stranger existence than that which is lived by turning one’s back on one’s own desires.

But while Almodovar was reluctant to say anything more to Cannes organizers for festival marketing material, the filmmaker has already spoken at length about the film. “There will be a confrontation between them, but really the story is very intimate,” said the director. said Indiewire.
