The movie Super Mario Bros. remains the biggest movie of 2023 and continues to break animated movie records this weekend as it surpasses the magical billion-dollar mark.
Sunny days ahead for ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’
Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic should celebrate such a standout performance at the box office, as should screenwriter Matthew Fogel. The movie managed to appeal to fans of the video game it’s based on, average moviegoers, and anime fans everywhere. No small feats, people.
With $488 million from North American markets and $535+/- million internationally, The movie Super Mario Bros. has the fourth biggest weekend in the United States for an animated picture.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 land in theaters next weekend, The movie Super Mario Bros. will finally relinquish his throne atop the weekly box office charts after wearing the crown for four straight weeks. Don’t expect Illumination and Universal’s Nintendo video game adaptation to fall far down the list.
While the start of the summer movie season means new challengers will fill the May release schedule and beyond, The movie Super Mario Bros. is still comfortably sailing toward a $1.1 billion-plus finish. And that’s assuming it experiences weekly drops more typical for a movie a month further into its run, something we’ve only seen so far for the hit family film.
I even suspect the arrival of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could even contribute to The movie Super Mario Bros. to stay at the box office. The combination of Chris Pratt’s star power in both films and the large number of family audiences of all ages and genre fans flocking to theaters for the arrival of the Guardians means a lot of goodwill and enthusiasm to see more movies.
In addition, so many potential ticket buyers show up on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opening weekend will inevitably mean sold-out screenings and the inability of many viewers to get the ideal seats they want (a recurring problem I addressed in an article earlier this week). And that means a percentage of the audience will have to choose a backup movie option, and I think those viewer demographics will favor The movie Super Mario Bros..
rom com What’s love got to do with it? has strong reviews and hopes to play as counter-programming, just like the heretofore unexamined romantic comedy love one more time. However, it’s still only the start of the summer season, and with the Covid pandemic still factoring into the box office in sometimes unexpected ways, it’s unclear how effective counter-programming will be at this stage.
However, while a segment of adults and couples will undoubtedly opt for these different offerings in the market, I think Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 bowing and The movie Super Mario Bros. continuing to draw large crowds will result in many alternative viewers skipping theaters altogether (in which case, I urge those viewers to read my review of the brilliant drama one thousand and one and rent it on PVOD this weekend for an amazing home experience you won’t forget).
That said, it’s possible that the turnout for rom-coms will be bigger than I expected and end up attracting enough of the total audience to subordinate The movie Super Mario Bros. to a third place, so we’ll see how things play out in the weekdays ahead.
For the moment, The movie Super Mario Bros. still dominates the roost and can celebrate a quick run to the Billion Dollar Club. Admittedly, this club has certainly grown in size over the past few years. In 2010, there were still less than $10 billion in all-time box office releases. Ten years ago, that number was 18. Today, there are more than 50.
After crossing the billion dollar threshold, The movie Super Mario Bros. should fall somewhere between No. 49 and No. 47 on the list of the highest-grossing films in history. At the end of its run, I feel confident Mario Brothers. will be in the top 33, if not the top 30.
How high it climbs on the box office charts depends on next week and the weekend after, and we’ll see if it continues to exceed expectations. Even at the lower end of performance, at this point The movie Super Mario Bros. will go down as one of the biggest hits of the year and be a contender for the biggest box office at the end of the year.
Be sure to check back soon, dear readers, as I bring you more box office updates for The movie Super Mario Bros.as well as my last previous box office for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ahead of its May 5 debut.
