The film opened to mixed reviews on Twitter, with some praising the performances while others called the film propaganda. Taran Adarsh gave the film a 4-star rating and called it powerful in his one-word review. Adarsh wrote, “Bold. Blunt. Encourages reflection. Impactful. Disturbing…You need a strong, powerful stomach to absorb this story…Director Sudipto Sen packs a solid punch…Adah Sharma is terrific…BOX OFFICE WINNER.
Film Distributor and Exhibitor Ranjat Lunkad tweeted: “The Kerala Story is ’empowering’. It’s a chilling film that makes you uncomfortable with the harsh reality. Vipul Amrutlal Shah and Sudipto Sen deserve credit for having directed this film. Adah Sharma gave performance of a lifetime. The Kerala Story review – 4 stars”.
One user said, “How did The Kerala Story get clarified? Leave the propaganda, it’s not even a movie, it’s pure torture.”
Sudipto Sen’s board focuses on the alleged conversion of three young women to Islam in Kerala, which leads to them being inducted into the militant Islamist group ISIS. The film was released in theaters across India on May 5 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. The Kerala story stars Adah Sharma, Sonia Balani, Siddhi Idnani and Yogita Bihani in the lead roles.
