‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ exceeds the box office by a billion dollars

Illumination/Nintendo’s Colorful, Egg-Filled Video Game Adventure The movie Super Mario Bros. continues to explode box office levels, achieving feats that are all the more impressive in the post-COVID film industry. This weekend, Universal Pictures’ release hit another major milestone with an estimated Sunday total of $1.022 billion helped by a boost of $68.3 million from 80 overseas markets (international total: $532.5 million).

The movie Super Mario Bros. is now the 10th animated feature to cross the $1 billion mark, and is the 10th Highest-Grossing Animated Feature Film of All Time having surpassed the hits of the Illumination franchise Despicable Me 2 (2013) and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022). With $45.3M in the world from IMAX screens is the third highest-grossing animation release in format.

The adaptation of the video game classic — brought to the screen by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (The Teen Titans Go!) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru), produced by Illumination founder/CEO Chris Meledandri and Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and featuring an all-star voice cast led by Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan Michael-Key and Jack Black since it opened in Japanwhere he scored the biggest opening weekend for a major animation studio with $14.3M. The pic became Universal’s fastest release to reach 1 billion yen and is the studio’s biggest opening ever in the country.

The photo also opened in Korea For $5.7Mthe highest performing non-holiday version of Illumination. The movie Super Mario Bros. top performers from Mexico ($73.2M total), UK ($56.4M), Germany ($43.9M), France ($40.8M) and Australia ($31.1 million).

In Indie Animation News, Makoto Shinkai susume (CoMix Wave Films/Story Inc.), which opened in North America on April 14 to rave reviews, enjoyed a $2 million weekend in 42 markets, bringing romantic sci-fi/fantasy to $23.8M worldwide (where the film is distributed by Sony Picture Entertainment and Crunchyroll; Wild Bunch International and Eurozoom are also international distribution partners.)

Toho released the picture in Japan for 14.51 billion yen, making it the fourth highest-grossing anime film of all time. He surpassed that of Shinkai Your name. to become the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time in China, grossing $82.3 million in its first 10 days. According to The Numbers, the film’s current worldwide box office total is $304.46 million.

The movie Super Mario Bros. likely won’t see a major animated contender for the 2023 box office crown until Sony Pictures Animation’s highly anticipated sequel is released Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse June 2, Pixar Elementary June 16 or original DreamWorks Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken June 30.
