Crying Neymar injures ankle in Brazil’s World Cup win

LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Brazil striker Neymar had ice on his ankle and cried on the bench after being substituted in the team’s 2-0 World Cup win over Serbia on Thursday.

Neymar injured his right ankle in the second half and was substituted in the 79th minute. He was tackled hard a few times during the game and was limping and grimacing before he had to leave the pitch.

He was in tears on the bench when doctors began to treat him in the final minutes of the game at the Lusail stadium. He pulled his shirt over his head as doctors stuck ice around his foot. He entered the locker room limping and with a swollen ankle.

Brazilian doctor Rodrigo Lasmar did not speculate on the extent of the injury, saying Neymar’s condition would be assessed.

“Let’s see how he reacts,” Lasmar told Brazilian media. “We have started treatment, but we have to be careful and patient. It’s too early to say anything. We’ll see how it evolves. »

Neymar has suffered a series of injuries since the 2018 World Cup but arrived in Qatar in fine form. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, his tournament ended with a back injury in the quarter-finals against Colombia, when he had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

Neymar, 30, is yet to win a major title with the national team. He helped the “Seleção” win the 2013 Confederations Cup and their first Olympic gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

With 75 goals for the national team, he is two behind Pelé’s goalscoring record.
