Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is one of many blockbuster releases soon to invade the summer box office, and its initial follow-up has potentially headed it for a huge opening weekend.
By deadline, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is poised to open around $68-70 million in its opening weekend. If that estimate holds true, it would be another great weekend for theaters, with forecasts for x fast reaching 60 million dollars, The little Mermaid swim to a $110 million 4-day start and Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse surpassing its predecessor’s opening with a debut of over $80 million.
The Transformers franchise at the box office
In terms of Transformers movies, this debut would top 2018’s debut Bumblebeewhich opened at $21.6 million, and Transformers: The Last Knight, which grossed $44.6 million during a holiday weekend that ended with $68.4 million. The best opening weekend for a Transformers movie go to second movie, Transformers: Revengewhich debuted at $109 million in 2009.
The opening weekend will be determined by word of mouth and reviews. This could inflate the opening or possibly shrink if the reaction is more negative. The good news is that pre-sales for the film would be very strong, and the franchise isn’t just a domestic player. Much of the success of Transformers the films came from foreign companies, especially in China. In 2017, the last knight grossed $228 million in China versus $130 million in the US, and while it’s an underperformer Transformers movie like Bumblebee, China always comes out on top. This particular installment made $170 million in China, while its domestic take was just $127.1 million.
The same for the Fast franchise, Transformers is big with men, young women, and a more diverse audience of Hispanic, Latino, and Black moviegoers. All monitoring to date shows that the awareness of all these groups is strong for The Rising of the Beastswhich is good news for Paramount as it will be a crowded summer full of potential blockbusters.
