Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Disney and Marvel Studios’ superhero sequel debuted with $114.0 million. That’s in the middle of Boxoffice PRO’s preliminary projection, which was between $105 and $125 million.
This is +20% compared to 2014 guardians of the galaxy ($94.3M), but -22% less than the 2017 sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5 million).
Flight. 3 wins opening weekend #58 all-time.
It’s also the #17 opening of all time in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) – ranking in the bottom half of the MCU on that metric.
The estimated audience demographics were 60% male and 52% aged 25+. These figures are both comparable to those of February Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (61% men and 53% aged 25 and over).
Abroad
Flight. 3 opened at $168.1 million overseas and $282.1 million worldwide, led by $28.1 million in China.
A comparison with Flight. 2 would not be accurate, as this film had a staggered opening in international markets starting in late April 2017.

Weekend
After four consecutive frames at the top, Universal’s animated video game adaptation finally drops to second place, down -54% to $18.6 million and second place.
The performance was strong enough to earn him the fifth weekend #17 all-time. mario also earns the fifth No. 3 Anime Weekend all-time.
Domestic total
With $518.1 million to date in the domestic market, mario ranks as the 17th greatest film of all time.
Among animated films in particular, it ranks third all-time nationally, behind only:
- 2018 Incredibles 2 ($608.5M)
- 2019 The Lion King ($543.6M)
Among post-pandemic films, it ranks #4 nationally, behind only:
- 2021 Spider-Man: No Coming Home ($814.1M)
- 2022 Top Gun: Maverick ($718.7M)
- 2022 Avatar: The Way of the Water ($683.8M)

mario earned $637.1 million overseas and $1.15 billion worldwide.
mario currently ranks 25th among films of all time worldwide.
It’s also the #6 anime title of all time worldwide, behind only:

Evil Dead Rise
Warner Bros.’ horror sequel debuted -5% below 2013 evil Deadbut fared better, first overtaking its predecessor at the same exit point from their respective sixth days.
Now in its third weekend, the film is down -53% to $5.7M and in third place.
With $54.1 million, Increase is +11% ahead of its predecessor at the same point ($48.4 million).
Increase earned $60.7 million overseas and $114.8 million worldwide, surpassing the 2013 worldwide total of $99.0 million evil Dead.

Last weekend, Lionsgate’s coming-of-age comedy opened to $6.7 million in third place.
It was below PRO ticket officewhich was in the range of 9 to 17 million dollars.
This weekend, it fell -49% to $3.3M and fourth place.
That’s steeper than the -38% sophomore drop for the similar 2016 teen theme. The edge of seventeenalso written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig.
Sisu
Last weekend, Lionsgate’s R-rated action thriller debuted with $3.3 million in tenth place. Sisu was only playing in 1,006 theaters, less than a third of the widest releases on the market.
Now in its second-year frame, it’s down -67% to $1.0 million.
Compared to other R-rated action thrillers of the year or two, this is steeper than sophomore drops for:
- 2022 violent night (-35%)
- 2021 The Eternal Purge (-43%)
- 2022 The man from the north (-48%)
- FEBRUARY cocaine bear (-52%)
- 2022 High-speed train (-55%)

Big George Foreman
Last weekend, Sony Pictures’ faith-based boxing biopic wasn’t exactly a knockout, with a $2.9 million debut at number 11.
This weekend, it drops -73% to $800,000.
That’s steeper than some other post-pandemic faith-based sports titles:
- 2021 American Underdog (-33%)
- 2022 Father Stu (-38%)
- 2016 Bleed for it (-61%)
