Almost five years after the debut of To all the boys I’ve loved before, Netflix revisits the story of a character who conquered the public as quickly as the film itself: Kitty Covey. In May, the youngest of the Covey sisters leads her own spin-off series, titled XO, Kitty. With just weeks to go, Netflix released the official trailer for the spin-off.
The series follows its main character, a teenage girl and self-proclaimed love expert – she brought Lara Jean and Peter together, after all. After watching her sister’s relationship blossom, Kitty (Anna Catcart) is ready to pursue hers with a Korean boy named Dae (Minyeong Choi). So she travels around the world to South Korea to find Dae. However, she quickly realizes that real life doesn’t quite match the romance novel ideas she has in mind.
Mixed with archival footage from the films, the trailer picks up where the first clip left viewers: Kitty (Cathcart) has been accepted into a South Korean school, and her father (John Corbett) and Trina (Sarayu Blue) decided she could attend. What ensues after is exactly what the show is about, as Kitty learns that Dae has moved on with another girl who was already living in the country. But Kitty didn’t come all this way for nothing, and despite the hiccups, she’s determined to win Dae back as she adjusts to her new school.
As Kitty works towards her main goal, the trailer teases that romance won’t be the show’s only important theme. Kitty herself even says that “it’s not just a boy”, as she also intends to experience all that South Korea has to offer. Naturally, she will face several challenges along the way, but she maintains a determined mindset to keep going. On the face of it, her journey is going pretty well because she has her own coming-of-age story.
